Being a business owner is great. Working out of your home is even better. But how can you make the most of it and ensure that your venture is a success? Here are five tips to help you get started:
1. Set A Start-Up Budget.
It doesn't matter if you're bootstrapping your insurance agency or taking out a loan to finance it. You need to know your numbers. Hopefully you know that there's a sufficient market for your services. But if you find there isn't, you'll need to draw the line somewhere. You can't pay taxes or your own business insurance premiums when you've only been working 15 hours a week, after all.
2. Create A Schedule For Work.
It may be your dream come true, but working at home comes with its own set of challenges. Pets don't understand that you can't cuddle all day long. Kids will run to you at any time, partners think you can are free to run errands the minute they call. Taking your own family's needs into account, plan your schedule out in a way that works best. This might mean hiring a babysitter to handle the kids between school and dinner time. You may have to tell your partner they need to call to get their tires rotated by themselves.
3. Develop Systems.
These will allow you to work faster and at a higher level. Devote your first two hours of the day to your work. Limit email to once a day and aim to get to inbox zero. Do your accounting every Friday. Having these systems will allow you to use your mental energy to focus on your work rather than wondering if you made your credit card payment or not.
4. Have Proper Amounts Of Business Insurance.
Although your business is out of your home, your homeowners policy likely won't cover your business. Having business insurance will usually cover you for a multitude of problems that could arise.
5. Make Your Business Pay Yourself Rent.
It's nice to not pay rent to someone else, but some day you might outgrow your home office. Prepare for this, and pad your personal bank account, by paying yourself rent. Talk this through with your accountant first to do it correctly. No amount of money is worth getting on Uncle Sam's bad side.
Follow these tips for starting your home business, and you'll find that you work more efficiently. You'll also save time and money with proper systems in place. For more information on coverage options, contact Quantum Alliance today.
